Counselors are the heart of Camp Lavender. You’ll support a cabin, plan and run workshops, help build community, and model the kind of care we want campers to experience. It’s hands-on, collaborative, and deeply meaningful youth work.

Counselor Work
All counselors facilitate a cabin group throughout the week and plan and run at least two workshops. Counselors are also expected to participate in pre-camp training, collaborate with fellow staff on daily programming, support emotional regulation, conflict mediation, and accessible routines, and practice community care and mutual support. Meals and lodging are provided.

Requirements
What we require for all volunteers and staff
Background Check & Safety Training
All staff must complete a background check and our core safety training. Volunteers should also expect to complete a background check. This helps ensure we’re meeting our legal obligations and keeping campers protected.
Pre-Event Training & Orientation
Everyone receives training that matches the work they’ll be doing, from full-session counselor prep to quick orientation for one-day volunteers. We want every adult representing Camp Lavender to understand our approach to youth work.
Commitment to Our Values & Community Agreements
All volunteers, whether for an hour or a full week, are expected to uphold our queer-centered, liberatory values. This includes practicing accountability, respect, and care in every interaction.
Role-Specific Time Commitment
Counselors and multi-day staff commit to the full camp session, while event or one-off volunteers commit to the specific timeframe of their assignment. Clear expectations help us create consistent, reliable support for youth and community members.

Be a Volunteer
If you want to support camp without being a full counselor, we also have year-round volunteer opportunities. You can volunteer to help us table events, support with setup and takedown, or even just sorting camp supplies. Volunteers make camp run smoothly and help us keep camp affordable!
