Designed for Disability

Camp Lavender is committed to building an environment where disabled, neurodivergent, and chronically ill community members can participate fully. We design our days with predictable schedules, quiet spaces, sensory supports, and adaptable programming. As a fully disabled-led organization, access is never an afterthought, but a core thought of how we practice community care.

What We Offer

Self-Selected Activities

Campers choose their afternoon activities each day. This helps everyone decide what works best for their body, energy level, and comfort that day.

Alternate Activities

Every activity that might be too physical, loud, or sensory-heavy will have a calmer, more accessible option you can join instead.

Calls Home

Campers who are having a hard time (with homesickness, anxiety, etc.) can call home if needed. Camp is otherwise a phone-free space to help everyone stay present and connected.

Turtle Time

Each day has a quiet hour called Turtle Time. It’s a time to rest, nap, stretch, stim, write, or simply recharge. Everyone is encouraged to use this time however they need.

About Our Space

We currently rent our campsite while we dream of a future where we have a permanent, fully accessible home in the woods. Our campsite this year has several strong accessibility features and a few limitations we want families to be aware of. The core buildings are all close together, so campers don’t need to walk long distances to get from place to place. There is a wheelchair accessible shower stall with a seat and a hand-held shower head in a separate shower house, and the paths around the dining hall and a staff cabin are compact gravel that tends to stay even and navigable. The camp also has areas that may present challenges for campers who use mobility aids, especially ones with wheels. The cabin area has forest debris on the ground, which can make wheeled mobility more difficult, and there’s a slight slope between the dining hall and the cabin cluster. We’re happy to talk through specific access needs in detail. If your camper uses mobility aids, has sensory or physical access considerations, or needs support navigating the site, we’ll work with you to create a plan that keeps them comfortable, safe, and included. Please reach out to us at info@camplavender.org with any questions.
